Magazine Island is part of the port of Townsville and has been heavily modified by port development. Along the east side of the island, toward the mouth of Ross River, is a narrow, 200 m long strip of sand between the road and the creek. While the creek is used by boats for access to the bay, the beach is not recommended for swimming owing to the tidal flats adjacent to the beach, boat traffic and strong tidal currents in the creek that parallels the beach.
