Five Mile beach (FR8G) represents a transition in the long beach. This 22 km long southern section runs from the mouth of First Creek, which together with Second, Third and Fourth Creeks, drain the 20 km long Jabiru Swamp. This section consists of a low, prograded foredune ridge plain, with the swamp between the ridges and backing high dunes. The plain increases to a maximum width of 3 km at the southern North Spit. The progradation is partly a result of a decrease in wave height and wave refraction around the tidal shoals of Wide Bay Harbour channel, that extend up to 5 km off the spit. The decreasing waves cause a change in the beach and surf, with the rip-dominated inner bar transforming to a continuous bar with no rips (Fig. 2.8b), then a steep beach with no bar. Likewise the outer bar deteriorates and is absent from the southern 5 km, south of Fourth Creek.
