South of Cape Ferguson is 15 km of sandy shore, ending at the 1 km wide mouth of the Haughton River. The beaches all face east, turning slightly north-east toward the river. A 10 km long road from the highway at Clevedon runs out to the southern end of Big Beach and Cungulla, both of which have scores of shacks and holiday houses. Chunda Bay lies tucked in behind Cape Ferguson and although east facing, is somewhat protected by the cape and extensive tidal flats. The bay’s beach (879) is 1.6 km long with small tidal creeks entering the bay at either end. The high tide beach is narrow and eroding, with numerous casuarina trees falling onto the beach. It is fronted by 300 to 400 m wide, sandy tidal flats that are exposed at low tide and dissected by the two tidal creek channels.
