Shepherd Bay is an open, 8 km wide, north-east facing bay on the north-eastern tip of the island. It is bordered by Cape Richards and Cape Sandwich. The bay contains 11 km of shoreline, consisting of six beaches separated by rocky shore. The first two beaches (802 & 803) are the larger of the six and occupy half the bay shoreline. There is no development on the beaches and the only access is by boat or on foot from the Cape Richards resort. South Shepherd Beach (803) is located on the south side of the Kirkville Hills. It is 1.8 km long and faces north-east. It receives slightly lower waves and also has a narrow high tide beach and a low tide bar up to 200 m wide.
