Kirkville Hills is an 80 m high and 3 km wide hillock located 3 km south of Cape Richards, the northern tip of the island. The base of the hills are exposed to the higher waves of Shepherd Bay to the east and the calmer conditions of Missionary Bay to the west. These three beaches fringe the western base of the hills. All three are in a natural state, with no development and no access other than by boat or foot.
Macushla Cove (798) lies on the south side of the hills and faces south. It consists of a narrow, sandy, 500 m long high tide beach, backed by the rising slopes of the hills, with rocks outcropping on the beach. It is fronted by sandy to muddy tidal flats, up to 200 m wide. To the east it grades into mangroves, while the western tip of the hills forms its western boundary.
