Cape Richards is the northernmost tip of Hinchinbrook Island. It consists of a one square kilometre, 140 m high hillock, that is tied to the Kirkville Hills and the remainder of the island by a 200 m wide, 2 km long, sandy barrier. On the north side of the cape, facing north, is a 300 m long pocket beach. It is bordered by prominent rocky headlands, with a few large rocks on the beach, and is backed by the island's only resort, hidden in amongst the dense vegetation. A small jetty on the west side of the beach provides the only access to the resort. The beach is composed of relatively coarse sand; together with the waves that average less than 0.5 m, this produces a narrow, moderately steep high tide beach, with a shallow bar at low tide. Resort guests launch a variety of watercraft from the beach.
