Little Reef Beach is named after the patch reef that lies immediately off the centre of the beach. The presence of the reef lowers waves in the centre and has caused the shoreline to protrude out to form a cuspate foreland. The beach is backed by the Cook Highway, with limited parking and access via a car park behind the centre of the beach. Steep slopes and rocky shorelines border the beach, while the centre is protected by the reef. The beach is moderately sloped and is up to 80 m wide at low tide.
