Between Rocky Point and Island Point is an 11 km wide, open bay. For the first 7 km south of Rocky Point is a strip of sandy beach cut by Saltwater Creek and the Mossman River into three beaches: Rocky Point (south), Newell Beach and Cooya. Increasing protection from Island Point, toward the southern end of Cooya Beach, permits mangroves to grow along the shoreline for the next 7 km to Port Douglas. Newell Beach is a 2 km long, east facing beach that is bordered by Saltwater Creek in the north and the Mossman River in the south. It lies 2 km east of the Daintree Road, with a road running out to the Palm Beach settlement that incorporates a store, caravan park, public parking and facilities. The beach is narrow and steep at high tide, but has a wide, shallow sand bar at low tide.
Beach Length: 2km
General Hazard Rating: 3/10
