Twin-peaked Cape Upstart is a 60 m high headland with steep cliffs and slopes on its north side, and a small valley below its southern slopes. The valley is occupied by one of the larger shack settlements on the cape, with a total of about thirty shacks. The back of the valley hangs over a small, rocky gap in the cape, while the front has a 250 m long, sand beach (921) and beachrock, fronted by gently sloping sand flats.
