Mandurah beach (WA 791) commences on the western side of the Peel Inlet training wall and breakwater that shelters the small boat harbour. The beach faces north-northwest and curves round for 800 m to the first of two modified by training walls to ensure a stable, permanent opening and a canal estate has been constructed in the former wetlands. The main part of the city lies to the east of the inlet, with beachfront suburbs to the west at Leighton Park and Halls Head, and extending north to Silver Sands. Halls Head and adjacent Robert Point also affords some protection to the inlet mouth, which is located 1 km east of the point. Mandurah is bordered by rock groynes, located at the ends of Aileen and Henson streets. The beach is sheltered by its orientation, Robert Point, the training walls and the extensive tidal delta, which extends 200-300 m off the inlet. As a consequence the western half of the beach is usually calm with waves only begin to pick up along the eastern section of the beach. The western half is also backed by a wide foreshore reserve built on the reclaimed land, with the beachfront houses of Silver Sands backing the eastern half.
