Beach Q 28 is located 4 km west of Bynoe Inlet. It is a narrow, 3 km long, low energy, northwest-facing strip of high tide sand fronted by 500 m wide ridged sand flats, then low tide mud flats. It is low and prone to overwashing and sits atop low tide mud forming a chenier, with mangroves bordering each end. A series of several earlier cheniers and intervening salt flats extend 15 km inland. Beach Q 29 commences on the eastern side of the 500 m wide river mouth. It trends northeast for 4.5 km, finally merging in behind the mangroves that then run for another 6 km to the Norman River mouth. The beach is fronted by irregular 500 m wide sand flats with scattered mangroves, then wider low tide mud flats. It is backed by a 12 km wide series of cheniers and salt flats, with recurved spits to either end. These have been eroded in places by the meandering of the Norman River, which has exposed the cheniers on its banks. read more
