Beach Q 22 is located on the western side of the Albert River mouth. It is an irregular, 1.6 km long, high tide beach fronted by 1 km wide intertidal ridged sand flats, and then another 2-3 km of tidal shoals associated with the river mouth. The narrow beach ridge is in turn backed by the extensive salt flats. Beach Q 23 lies on the eastern side of the 500 m wide river mouth and is a 2.4 km long beach that is fronted by sand flats and the river channel in the west, grading into extensive mangroves to the east and then the mouth of the Leichhardt River, with 4 km wide river mouth shoals off the beach.
