South Passage is one of the two main connections between Moreton Bay and the ocean and each day, massive volumes of water flow through the 3 km wide passage. On the bay side the currents have built a 150 km2 flood tidal delta, while on the ocean side the impact of the waves has reduced the ebb tidal delta to 50 km2. These still extensive ebb tidal shoals and the 7 km long channel have a tremendous impact on the southern end of the island. First the waves must break over the shoals and fight the currents, substantially reducing their height at the beach; and second, movement in the position of the shoals and channel result in realignment of the beach shoreline, at times building out hundreds of metres and impounding backing lagoons, at other times being cut back to the dunes. Consequently, the 6 km long South Passage Beach (MOR6), while relatively low wave energy, is very dynamic over a period of years to decades and is always paralleled by strong tidal currents. The beach ends at Reeders Point, the southern tip of the island. On the western side of the point begin the protected, low energy bay beaches.
