The Spit section of beach (1591A) extends for 4 km from the Nerang training wall to Narrow Neck. The jetty just south of the wall houses a sand bypassing system that pumps sand from the beach across the inlet to South Stradbroke Island. The road from Southport ends at a large car park behind the jetty. The jetty and entrance wall are favourite surfing and fishing spots. The only relatively natural dune section of beach occupies the next 2 km, before the beachfront Mirage Resort is encountered. The Nerang Road links up with Main Beach Parade at Southport and runs right behind the beach. Opposite Seaworld is a beach car park and access, with this section patrolled by the Seaworld lifeguard tower. Narrow Neck is the location of the Gold Coast surfing reef, which will be designed to both widen the precariously narrow beach and dune, as well as provide consistent waves for surfers and surfing contests. It is the most advance surfing reef in the world and should add to the many attractions that already attract millions each year to the Gold Coast.
