The famous Mallacoota Inlet, and infamous bar, form the western end of Mallacoota Spit, a 7 to 8 km long south to south-east facing beach, also called the Big Beach. The length of the beach depends on the location of the inlet, which can shift a kilometre or more. The beach extends to the sandy foreland in lee of Tullaberga Island. It is backed by a low vegetated foredune in the west, which gives way to a series of blowouts to the east. The exposed surf zone receives waves averaging more than 1.5 m, which produce a 350 m wide double bar system. The inner bar is usually attached to the shore and is cut by rips every 300 m, producing up to 24 rips. In addition, the extensive tidal shoals and channels of the inlet dominate the western kilometre of the beach. The western end can easily be reached by boat from Mallacoota, with a long walk required to reach the rest of the beach. In 1994 the inlet closed, thus linking the beach to Bastion Point. read more
