Blue Lagoon is a placid lagoon-type beach protected by a rock reef that extends immediately south of Shelly Beach. The reefs lies up to 200 m offshore and shelter the entire 400 m long Blue Lagoon beach (NSW 281), rejoining the shore at the wide southern rock platform (Fig. 4.167). While the reef and rocks off the lagoon receive moderate waves and are dangerous, the protected lagoon and beach usually have waves less then 0.5 m high, which cross the lagoon and surge up the steep reflective beach face. The beach has long attracted visitors, who are catered for in a caravan and cabin type resort that occupies all of the back beach area. The cabins extend right to the back of the beach and offer truly beachfront living. The public however have access to and along the beach.
