Taren Point and its northern neighbour Rocky Point form the western boundary of the bay and are sufficiently close to be crossed by the Captain Cook Bridge, the major road artery into Sutherland Shire. Towra Point is a nature reserve on the southern shore of the bay, and consists of two low sand spits, which converge on the point. The southwestern arm, which also parallels the Georges River mouth is mobile and varies over time in response to wave, tide and river conditions. Two beaches are located on the eastern tip of the point. Taren Point beach (BB 16) extends immediately east of the bridge approaches for 100 m. It is a northeast-facing strip of sand and rocks, backed by waterfront houses and slopes rising to 20 m (Fig. 4.257). It has a narrow wooden jetty across the centre and is usually calm, though strong tidal currents flow off the beach. It can be accessed via Woodland Rd and the bridge walkway at its western end. Four hundred metres to the south is a gap in the waterfront houses of Woodland Rd, which lead to a flat grassy reserve, fronted in part by beach BB 17. The very low energy east-facing beach is 1 m wide at high tide and backed by a low rocky seawall, while intertidal sand flats extends 100 m offshore. It is bordered by house-covered slopes to the north and dense mangrove-covered sand flats to the south.
