Ulladulla Harbour is situated in a natural bay, with the southern Warden Head extending 1.5 km seaward and reefs and bomboras across parts of the bay entrance. To improve anchorage a stone pier was built in 1865 and two more substantial attached breakwaters between 1960 and 1964. A 60 m wide gap between the breakwaters provides access to the inner harbour. Three beaches (NSW 470) are located either side and inside the harbour, and two along the southern rocky shore (NSW 471). The northern beach (NSW 470N) is a 250 m long strip of high tide sand, fronted by an irregular mixture of rock flats and reefs extending 100 m off the shore. It faces southeast across the bay and usually receives low waves, while it is backed by 10 m high bluffs and bordered in the south by the northern breakwater. At the western extremity of the bay and inside the breakwaters is the harbour beach (NSW 470), a curving 450 m long beach, which extends from the northern rocks to the base of the southern wharf and breakwater (Fig. 4.354). It is backed by a narrow reserve and the Princes Highway and the Ulladulla shopping centre, while the wharf and boating facilities occupy the southern area. The beach receives very low waves through the harbour entrance, which maintain a steep reflective sandy shoreline. A small creek flows onto the north side of the beach forming a shallow tidal delta. The beach can be readily accessed from the Princes Highway and a car park behind the southern half, in front of which boat owners leave their dinghies on the beach. A boat ramp is located at the northern end. Numerous small boats are moored off the beach. This is a nice spot to stop on the highway, but too developed and utilised by boats to attract swimmers. The southern breakwater forms the northern boundary of beach NSW 470S. This is a 300 m long east-facing narrow strip of high tide sand fronted by 80 m wide intertidal rock flats, that terminate against the 20 m high base of Warden Head. The Ulladulla rock pool is located across the centre of the beach. It lies adjacent to the large boat harbour parking area. One hundred metres east of the pool beach is a 100 m wide north-facing rocky bay containing beach NSW 471W. This consists of a strip of high tide sand fronted by 40 m wide intertidal rock flats, with low waves only reaching the beach at high tide. Another 150 m to the east in the next rocky bay is beach NSW 471. This is a curving 150 m long, north-facing reflective beach, bordered by rock platforms and points extending 200 m northward on either side. The beaches are backed by wooden slopes rising to 20 m and can only be access on foot via the blufftop caravan park.
