Mona Vale headland forms the northern boundary of a 2.5 km wide east-facing embayment that contains three near continuous beaches (NSW 306-308) (Figs. 4.203 & 4.204), with the prominent 60 m high Turimetta Head forming the southern boundary. The northern beach, The Basin (NSW 306, also called Bongin Bongin) is located between the base of the head and an intertidal rock reef, 200 m to the south. The 300 m long beach curves in an east-facing arc between the boundary rocks. Its embayed location, plus submerged reefs across the entrance lower waves to about 0.5 m, which maintain a steep, cusped reflective beach. The beach is backed by several beachfront houses and apartments, with access at either end. A rock pool is located on the reef, accessible across the sand tombolo, which ties the reef to the shore.
