Moonee Beach (NSW 261) is located on the southern side of Catherine Hill Bay, with the Moonee Colliery dominating the northern slopes of the backing valley. The beach however lies within the conservation area with vehicle access to the northern end via a gravel road running past the coal mine and its coal stockpiles. The road terminates at a car park, with a 500 m walk to the beach. Once down on the beach however it is a lovely natural spot. The beach is 1 km in length trending east-southeast between the 40 m high northern headland, where a small creek backs the beach, past some southern reefs to a 10 m high Flat Rocks Point. In the north the beach receives waves averaging 1.3 m which generate an attached bar usually cut by a permanent rips against the northern headland and one to two beach rips (Fig. 4.153).
