Big Hill is a 700 km long, 100 m high headland, with steep, jagged eastern cliffs, and a rain forest on the western slopes. A walking track commences at the Melaleuca car park on the northern side of the hill and leads around the northern faces and return through the rain forest. The northern beach (NSW 155N) is accessible via a rough steep descent off this track. This is a transient beach that is completed eroded during high seas, exposing jagged rocks and boulders. Following prolonged periods of lower waves two 20 m pockets of sand accumulate over some of the rocks, however the whole system is rock-dominated and very hazardous, with a strong permanent rip draining the small rocky bay. The main Big Hill beach (NSW 155) is located on the southern side of the hill in a small rock amphitheatre. It consists of a 80 m long strip of curving sand, backed by a high tide boulder beach, then steep sloping rising to 50 m. It can only be reached on foot from the northern Barries Bay car park, with a steep track descending to the southern end of the beach.
