Boat Beach (NSW 216) is one of the more scenic beaches on the east coast. It occupies the north-facing Sugarloaf Bay and is protected from southerlies by 150 m high dune-capped hills behind. Prominent headlands border each end of the 550 m long beach, with Staris Rock reefs also lying off the eastern headland, resulting in wave averaging less than 1 m at the beach. As the road over from Number One crests the hill, a small grassy park, opposite the only store, provides an excellent view of the beach. The beach is used by professional fishers and divers for launching their boats, and a steel winch cable, for hauling in the big open fishing boats, crosses the beach and narrow road (Fig. 4.121). Dotted round the backing slopes are the shacks and weekenders of the fishers and locals. The only place to park is at the southern end, which is also used as a base by the SCUBA divers.
