On the west side of Box Head the irregular steep rocky coast trends north for 3 km past Little Box Head, to the entrance to Brisbane Water at Half Tide Rock. Wedged into two rocky embayments along the shore are two small beaches (NSW 295 & 296). Iron Ladder Beach (NSW 295) lies on the west side of Box Head, 1 km north of the head. It faces the south-southwest into Broken Bay entrance. It can only be reached on foot from the Hawke Head Drive car park along a track that follows the spur before descending the steep valley to the beach. The beach is at best a 50 m long sliver of sand, backed by steep rocks and covered by most high tides. Waves are low, with calm conditions and no surf except during high seas. Occasionally used by fishers and the odd hiker, otherwise little visited. Relatively quiet for swimming, however it is isolated.
