On the southern side of the southern Bellinger River entrance wall the coast trends south for 5 km past Hungry Head to the low Wenonah Head, with several rocks reefs off the both heads. In between are three beaches (NSW 117-119). The northern beach (NSW 117) extends for 2 km south of the entrance wall to the rocks on the northern side of Hungry Head, a beach-fronted 20 m high vegetated bluff. This is a relative new beach as prior to the construction of the entrance wall in 1965 the river used to break out as far south of Hungry Head. The beach is now relatively stable and backed by several hundred metres of low vegetated dunes, then 200 m wide Urunga Lagoon, a remnant of the old river channel. It is fronted by a single bar cut by up to 15 rips. The rips tend to decrease in strength to the south owing to a slight lowering in wave height in lee of the reefs off Hungry Head. read more
